More than 2,000 pigs missing after African swine fever outbreak in Negeri Sembilan farm
(Seremban, 24th) The Negeri Sembilan Veterinary Department revealed that following the outbreak of African swine fever in illegal pig farms in Negeri Sembilan, it is estimated that about 2,000 pigs in the area were quietly transported away by pig farmers and are currently missing!
According to the Metro Daily, 19 pig farms in Tanah Merah New Village A, Port Dickson were suddenly cleared after the outbreak of African swine fever. It is estimated that 2,000 pigs were transported away without the knowledge of the Veterinary Department.
According to earlier reports, one of the illegal pig farms in the area was found to have 2 pigs infected with the African swine fever (ASF) virus after inspection, so that the other 275 pigs in the farm had to be eliminated.
Datuk Barkley, the Negeri Sembilan State Executive Councillor in charge of agriculture and food industry affairs, said that the Negeri Sembilan Veterinary Department's monitoring team only discovered that the pig farmers quietly emptied all the pigs when they went to the illegal pig farms for inspection.
“However, the farmers did not give any prior notice. As of now, the Negeri Sembilan Veterinary Department is still unclear whether the pigs were transported away privately or slaughtered privately. ”
He revealed that the authorities have been monitoring the pig farms since the outbreak of swine fever in the area. However, the authorities have notified the police of the matter and will take further action once they know the whereabouts of the pigs.
Bakley made the above remarks to the media while attending an online promotion event for agricultural products in Ballet Jaya today.
He revealed that the Negeri Sembilan Veterinary Department has not received any information that the operators of the 19 illegal pig farms may sell these pigs to the public at low prices. However, he reminded the public to be cautious.
The Negeri Sembilan Veterinary Department discovered the first case of African swine fever in an illegal pig farm in Area A of Tanah Merah New Village on April 8, and immediately destroyed 275 pigs on the farm.
However, according to statistics, there are 19 illegal pig farms near the farm, conservatively estimated to raise more than 2,000 pigs.
