A new high has hit even the vendors want to retire. Quick control of rising pork prices

New highs, even vendors want to retire, quickly control the rising trend of pork prices

(Kuala Lumpur, 13th) The price of live pigs has soared again, and the market retail price has been raised by RM1 from today, making retailers and related sectors, including pork vendors and cooked food vendors, shout that they can't afford it. The repeated soaring prices have not only scared away customers and reduced income, but also wholesalers have joined the retail sector to share a piece of the pie, making the already damaged business worse. Some pork vendors have even thought of "retiring early". They urge the government to intervene as soon as possible and control the continued surge in live pig prices.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic in our country has entered a easing phase, pork, one of the indispensable foods for the Chinese, is continuing to rise at an alarming rate. This year alone, it has been raised for the 9th time. The retail price of raw pork per kilogram has now risen to RM1 to RM2, and the "rising tide" may continue until the Chinese New Year next year, causing pork to become one of the economic burdens for consumers.

For this reason, China Press visited the Pudu Integrated Commercial Building (ICC Pudu) today. The pork vendors interviewed all told that from today, the price of all parts of pork will be raised by RM1 again, which can be said to have reached a "historical high". Many customers left as soon as they heard about the "high-priced pork". The sudden drop in customer base made them feel disappointed and angry. Whether it is retail pork vendors, cooked food vendors, or even consumers, they all urged the government to intervene to curb the "rising tide of pork".

“This year alone, the price of live pigs has increased 9 times. Even the lower-priced top-quality meat has increased from RM21 per kilogram last week to RM22. I wonder how much it will increase next time! ”

Wholesalers join retailers to grab business
Some of the hawkers interviewed said that since the price of live pigs has been repeatedly raised, their business has been greatly affected. There are less than 5 customers a day. Fortunately, they can barely make a living by delivering goods to cooked food businesses on a regular basis.

“In fact, every time the price of pork increases, we will reduce the supply to avoid unsalable goods. Compared with the early years, the amount of pork we sell has become less and less, but there are still surplus goods that can only be stored. If the situation continues to deteriorate, I will also consider holding on for a few more years and retiring early. ”

Businessmen said that the biggest difficulty facing retail pork vendors nowadays is that many wholesalers have joined the retail sector. For example, 7 out of 10 wholesalers have started to engage in the retail sector to grab the market share, and their prices are lower than those of general retail pork vendors. The huge competitiveness has caused them to be "led by the nose", and they all lamented that business is difficult and they are getting more and more discouraged.

Despite this, some pork vendors interviewed believe that since pork is one of the necessities for most Chinese food cooking, even if the price of pork increases, there are still many consumers willing to pay and pick up the goods, and they do not notice the price increase and continue to patronize as usual.

Cooked food vendors prefer to absorb costs

The rising prices of everything have forced ordinary people to tighten their belts. Therefore, most cooked food vendors believe that the price of cooked food has risen now. If the cost increase of live pigs is passed on to consumers, it may further increase the economic burden of customers. Therefore, they would rather absorb the increased costs themselves until they can no longer bear it. Only then will they consider adjusting prices.

Some of the cooked food vendors interviewed said that when they picked up the goods from the pork vendors, they learned that the price of pork had increased by RM1. Although some have not been informed of the price increase, they have prepared themselves mentally. However, they do not plan to adjust prices.

"Unlike the pork vendors who sell at a high price, the price of cooked food cannot be raised every few months. Generally, it will be raised half a year to a year. Otherwise, it will definitely cause a strong backlash from customers. Therefore, we dare not raise prices rashly. After all, we understand that everyone's life is difficult. We can only make less money and sell more at a low profit."

They said that from now until the end of this year, they do not plan to adjust prices. Unless the price of live pigs continues to rise every month, and the increase is outrageous, they will consider adjusting prices again from next year.

If I don’t raise the price, I will earn less
>Mr. Zhuang (62 years old, pork noodle stall owner)
When I received the goods on Tuesday (13th), the price of pork had increased by about RM1 to RM2, but I would still maintain the original price. After all, there are many regular customers here, and the price of cooked food has risen now. A single meal costs RM10, and three meals a day cost RM30, not including other family and personal expenses. We are also ordinary people, so we understand the situation of our customers. If we don’t raise the price, we will earn less and sell more with small profits.

Price increase will definitely trigger a rebound
>Mrs. Zhang (43 years old, pork noodle stall owner)
We are definitely affected by the increase in the price of live pigs, because the price of cooked food is not as fast as the increase in pork prices. It is often increased once every six months to a year, otherwise it will definitely trigger a rebound from customers. At this stage, we dare not raise prices rashly. Unless the price of pork soars almost every month, and other raw materials also rise at the same time, we will consider raising prices again.

About two years ago, the price of pork we bought was about RM300, but now the same amount has risen to RM500 to RM600. The price of pork has increased almost every month, but we have not. When we picked up the goods today, the pork vendor did not inform us of the price increase. It is possible that the other party will adjust the price based on the situation, so we have already prepared for the upcoming price increase of pork.

In fact, many customers are wondering if we will adjust the price of cooked food if the price of pork drops. Based on our experience, the price of pork cannot return to the normal level in an instant. At most, it will drop slightly. In any case, we will decide based on the situation. We also hope that the government can join and strengthen the control to curb the continued high increase in pork prices.

Unknown reason for the price increase
>Ms. Li (70 years old, pork vendor)
The wholesaler informed us that the price of each type of pork will increase by RM1 from today, so we have no choice but to adjust the price accordingly. For example, the price of pork belly has increased from RM38 per kilogram to RM39, the price of top and hind leg meat has increased from RM21 to RM22, and the price of ribs has increased from RM28 to RM29. What is infuriating is that many customers leave after asking about the price, which makes us very sad and angry. We also hope that consumers will show mercy. If you are not interested in buying, don't ask. This will only make us "more sad the more you ask."

In fact, we don’t know the reason for the price increase. The relevant authorities should question the wholesalers, why the price keeps increasing. The price has increased 9 times this year alone. We are all very worried that the price will continue to increase in the future, so we hope that the government can intervene and stop the pork price from increasing again, which will make the people suffer!

Less than 5 customers
>Mr. Xie (60 years old, pork vendor)
Since the price of pork has increased repeatedly this year, our customer base has dropped sharply. Many people complain that pork is too expensive. How can customers digest pork belly that costs more than RM30 per kilogram? Nowadays, the number of customers who patronize us on a normal day is less than 5, and the business is very bleak. Fortunately, we still deliver to the cooked food vendors, otherwise we will hardly survive!

The biggest difficulty we are facing now is that many wholesalers have joined the retail sector, which has put us in a strong competitive position. For example, among 10 wholesalers, 7 wholesalers are engaged in retail to grab the market, and they sell pork at low prices, which leads us to be led by the nose and forced to lower the price continuously. The market is monopolized, and we, the retailers, are the ones who have the most difficulty surviving!

This year's pork price has reached a record high. It is not a solution for the government not to regulate it. We are always worried that the price of pork will rise again next month. I have also started to plan to hold on for a few more years and retire early.

Customers did not complain
>Xie Zhaofu (59 years old, pork vendor)
I heard that pork prices will not drop this year, but from my observation, even if pork prices increase, many customers will still choose to buy, and some will buy less to reduce living expenses. In fact, we were only informed of the pork price increase last week, so we did not have time to inform customers today, but most of them did not complain about it. The cooked food stalls that pick up goods will inquire, but will pick up goods as usual, after all, they still have to do business.

Will still buy if the price increases slightly
>Mr. Chen (37 years old, office worker)
I rarely cook for myself, so I don’t know the price of pork, but the prices of cooked food in the market are very fair, and I will still patronize it even if the price increases slightly.

Buy less to balance expenses
>Ms. Xu (62 years old, housewife)
Even if the price of pork increases, we still have to eat it. At most, we can buy less, or not eat it every day, and choose other meats or seafood to replace it to balance living expenses. In fact, the amount we buy every year is about the same. If the price increases by RM1 to RM2, it is acceptable because we don’t eat it every day, but I still hope that the price of pork will not continue to increase. It would be better if the price can be reduced!
